Don't be what you're complaining about.
To most people this makes sense. If you're going to crusade against racism, don't be in the Klan. If you're going to crusade against the eeeebuls of homersecksyouallity, don't be doing meth with your gay male prostitute. Seems logical, right?
When it comes right down to it, if you're going to get pissy about something, don't do that something you're being pissy about. Don't be a flaming hypocrite. Now, everyone at some point during the year, month, day, whatever, is hypocritical. It's unavoidable, and as long as it's a transient problem, no one really cares.
It's when we see the homophobic congressman busted for drunk driving outside of the gay bar he just left, with his one night stand in the passenger's seat that we experience that fun combination of anger and schadenfreude. Or when a certain Adobe blogger, who is so very, very concerned with not allowing evil, mean, foul-mouthed trolls to 'pollute his conversation' with ad-hominem attacks and anonymous attacks and statements without facts on his blog, has no problem continuously engaging in those very same behaviors on his twitter feed.
No, I'm not talking about John Nack. Nack does mix it up where he thinks it's appropriate, and he can be a whiny bitch at times, but for the most part, even when I don't agree with him, I don't see him calling people who disagree with him "mactards'. Nack's not perfect, but, by and large, he does a good job of being a grownup about things. I am of course speaking of the other John in the Adobe blaaahgosphere, John Dowdell, or as I call him, "that fucking dowdellhead".
Gods be damned, even Scoble's not as much of a relentlessly whiny, hypocritical, passive-agressive assmunch as Dowdell. Almost every post about Apple and Flash, that fucker makes, he has some crybaby bit at the end about what kind of comments he'll allow, or some idiocy that makes him sound like a lone candle in the dark:
[Comments: Software wars elsewhere, and please "own your words", thanks.]
[Comments: Software wars elsewhere, thanks.]
Crowds are directed to sites to shout down any opposition. Keep an eye on macsurfer.com to predict which "inconvenient truths" will receive abusive comments. We don't need to publish the words of those who speak pseudonymously... we do not need to spend far more time listening to them than they to us.
The culture of Apple is flawed. They are secretive and authoritarian, and attract (among others) angry little submissives who then act out on others. We should listen to them, but not unduly, not more than they listen to others.
The Golden Rule has arisen spontaneously in almost all human cultures. If you believe some people do not follow it, then the usual reading is "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." But if you believe that all of us do, in fact, follow it -- that the universal Golden Rule is descriptive, rather than merely prescriptive -- then such abusive commenters are treating others as they themselves wish to be treated. Finding an ethical middle between these readings is our challenge to resolve.
My thanks to Dan, Jan, and all those many others who "speak truth to power" and are personally attacked as a result. The mob's power, while sharp, is small and weak, and shall not stand. Truth will out.
(Is that why Adobe threatened Microsoft over native PDF generation? That's a pretty fucked-up interpretation of the Golden Rule if you ask me.)
If he's not doing that, then he's showing us how he's an avid reader of shitty pop-psychology & self help books with rambling shit about how...oh fuck, who can tell, he's such a supercilious twat about all of it.
But then, mr. 'be nice', 'take your wars somewhere else' gets on twitter, and hoooo...oh, the knives come out:
"The Dell Streak is Not a Tablet"? No, sorry, you are not God. 800x480 has been an accepted tablet size for years, since N700. Newbie folly.
Paging through the Techmeme cluster on "Froyo slow", and writers are really too dumb for words. Control WMODE, cache, video size etc. C'mon.
Panic in Phanboyland! "Adobe Faces Tough Fight for Flash Survival" "Developers abandon Flash as clients demand iPhone" Let's bet beer on it!
For "Draw Mohammed Day", I hear Pakistan shut Facebook, but Facebook had pulled the page, and Apple pulled an app. What other Web effects..?
Okay, bloggers still writing "The increasing criticism of Flash appears to be driving the adoption of H.264 video" are beyond honestly dumb.
Just sent anonymous email to @jesusdiaz telling him that @gruber has some objectionable & libelous condition or other. What's wrong w/ that?
Congratulations @dportela ! You are the first person to convince me to start blocking off the mactards who wizz dumb rejoinders into stream.
So, let's recap:
Software wars are wrong...unless you're John Dowdell. Then stoking the Flash/Adobe flames higher, that's okay.
Anonymous comments are wrong...unless you're John Dowdell. Then sending anonymous email to start a fight between a blogger you dislike and a blogger you like, that's okay.
Calling people names and ad hominem attacks are bad, unless you're John Dowdell. Then calling people names is okay.
Look, I obviously don't have a problem with blunt, strong language and opinions. But, if you're going to cry about software wars, and owning your words, and ad hominem name-calling, then don't immediately turn around and be a passive-agressive hypocritical little bitch multiple times a day!
So any time you see Dowdell pontificating about 'proper behavior' remember, the only difference between him and Ted Haggard...well, there's no difference. They're both hypocritical little cocksuckers.| Comments ()
