Sometimes, even when it doesn't work out, it still does

So, my son's plans of Xmas in Portland OR, didn't quite pan out. Thanks to some astoundingly bad weather and timing, he's spending xmas back in FL, because PDX is going to be closed for days. Denver's nice, but not when you're stuck there. Oh well, there are worse things, but he's bummed. His mom's in Portland, and that's been one of their holidays.

However, there's a silver lining. It has names. Like Chuck Goolsbee, who offered to call in a favor if needed, and have a local friend let Alex crash for the night. Like Jeff Gamet, who, had Alex been able to fly out to Portland tomorrow, would have picked him up from DIA, and given him some place a BIT nicer than the DIA lounge to stay.

Chuck and Jeff are among the folks I've met over the years via da intarwebs, and Macworld Expo. They're the kind of people I think of when I read yet another OMG story about all the evil on the internet and how if your kid gets on the internet, pervs will be climbing through your WINDOWS to get to them.

For me, the Internet isn't a scary place, and Macworld expo isn't just some trade show. It's a collection of people I know, and have known for a long time in some cases. Who buy me beer, and drink beer I buy them when I see them. That's not to say that the Internet is all sunshine and rainbows, and Macworld Expo isn't a trade show.

But labeling either as 'just' this or 'just' that is doing a disservice to both.

Were it not for the Internet, Macworld Expo, and the Mac, I'd probably not know either Chuck or Jeff, and the suck potential for Alex's Misadventures in Winter Flying would have been FAR higher. So many, many, sincere thanks to both Chuck and Jeff, even though neither of them had to, in the end, do much of anything. Like the oft-ignored saying goes: "It's the thought that counts", and unlike some folks, for me, it counts a lot.

Think about stuff like this the next time you want to say things like Macworld are a waste of time.
