A Reminder about Out of Office Messages

Okay folks, I'd have thought we'd have figured this out.

Once again, I overestimate the intelligence of IT Admins on mailing lists. So let's be clear. Yes the xmas holidays are coming, along with Thanksgiving. Many, many people will not be in the office. A subset of them suffer under stupid-assed policies that require them to annoy the shit out of the world with Out of OFfice, or OOF messages. (Yes, i know that's not what OOF originally stood for. Since people are now using ECM for Document Management systems, suffer baby, suffer.)

HOWEVER...

If you are going on vacation, and you have to use those fucking things then:

  1. Set up exceptions so that you do not, ever, send OOF messages to mailing lists

  2. Just unsubscribe from the list for a few days. It's a fucking mailing list. The secret to life, itself! will never show up on a fucking mailing list. If you miss a few days, just search the damned archives.

Seriously, every time I see one of those goddamned things on a mailing list, especially one for IT people, it makes me want to invent the taser shoe, so when I kick them in the taint, their eyeballs fry. I get that you may have no choice in using the things, but you CAN make sure that thousands of people who don't give a rat's ass aren't spammed by the things over and over.

Warning for Notes users: The commenting system uses HTML.
I know this will be scary for some of you, especially Notes fans. However, open standards, rah-rah.
If you want to use less-than or greater-than signs, or other similar characters that HTML reserves,
you'll simply have to learn to do it the HTML way. Luckily, HTML is kind of popular, no matter what
your re-educators have told you, and you can easily find help on the intertubes.
