On single-sourcing

This was inspired by, oddly, both Fake Steve Jobs and the real one. Fake Steve because of this post, and Real Steve who, in an email reply about single sourcing and why companies have a problem with Apple due to there only being one source for Apple Hardware said:

Then why don't they mind single-sourcing their OS from Microsoft?
I have yet to find a good answer to that one beyond: ...because they're stupid, short-sighted and perhaps a tad hypocritical.
